Montagu
Route 62 in South Africa is fast becoming as well known as the infamous Route 66 in
America, and for good reason. Not only is it the longest wine route in the world, but it also leads to the beautiful
historic village of Montagu.
Montagu is cradled by the spectacular Langeberg mountain range and is famous for her
orchards, vineyards, local herbs, rock formations and healing hot mineral springs. Rich in
national Cape Dutch and Georgian National Monuments Montagu is a perfect example of a Late
Victorian agricultural village in the Western Cape.
Montagu used to be known as the "Lungs of the Cape" and even today the crystal clear air
adds a touch of magic, which is tangible, when you enter into this beautiful village.
The many fine restaurants will entice the gourmet in you, and if you feel you have
indulged to much the numerous walking trails will soon appease your guilty conscience.
Montagu is also becoming world famous amongst the rock-climbing fraternity.
The main attraction to Montagu is undoubtedly the hot springs, where sore muscles are
eased in the clear mineral water. If nature appeals more to your senses, why not pack a
picnic basket and head for the Nature Garden. Lovingly tended to and with many varieties
of bird species, it is a superb way to spend an afternoon. Other activities include golf, hiking and wine tasting.
